We reached dry land at last!!!
Dave Smith was off with his new golfing buddies for the first of four rounds at Golf Clubs along our route. Harold and Julie chose to take the shuttle bus into Funchal for a mooch round the town, and Dave and I were terribly adventurous (for us) and bartered with a taxi driver on the quayside to take us up the hill to the Botanical Gardens. A wonderful place, with amazing plants – and a parrot park, which was not quite so wonderful, with birds in tiny cages looking very sorry for themselves.
We’d intended to try to walk back down to the town, but it looked as if it would be a very challenging hike, and there was a taxi waiting outside the exit... and it was raining by now... so we jumped in and the very nice driver took us to the local (indoor) market. Glorious displays of fruits and vegetables, handicrafts and a separate fish market, so it was really interesting to look round. We had lunch in town, and then walked back to the ship and, yes, tested the balcony! A lovely day.
